Online Degrees and Global Upskilling – Janatha Mirror
Online degrees and professional certificates are reshaping global education as AI skills, flexible learning and lifelong upskilling gain importance.
1. Online learning moves into a new phase
Online education is becoming an important part of career development worldwide, as workers and students look for flexible ways to gain qualifications without leaving their jobs. Universities, digital learning platforms and employers are increasingly connecting academic programmes with practical professional skills. The focus is shifting beyond simply completing online courses towards demonstrating capabilities that can be used in real workplaces.

2. UNESCO highlights digital lifelong learning
A major international discussion on this transition took place in Shanghai, China, on October 16–17, 2026. The International Conference on Digital Lifelong Learning, jointly organised by Shanghai Open University and UNESCO education bodies, examined how artificial intelligence and digital technologies can make education more accessible and inclusive. Discussions covered AI-supported learning, teacher training, open education and opportunities for learners of different ages.

3. AI skills and professional certificates attract attention
Coursera's Global Skills Report 2026, published on September 28, analysed learning trends across 98 countries. The company reported that enrolments in generative AI courses across Coursera and Udemy had increased to more than 45 per minute, compared with 25 per minute in 2025. It also reported year-on-year growth of 33% in micro-credential enrolments and 122% in AI micro-credentials. Separately, a 2U survey of 507 workforce-learning leaders found that 83% of respondents considered AI capabilities a workforce priority, while only 29% said their organisations had mature AI capabilities. These are company-reported findings, but they indicate the growing importance of job-related learning.
4. What students and working professionals should consider
Online degrees can help learners pursue formal higher education with greater flexibility, while short certificates and micro-credentials can support targeted skill development. However, learners should check university recognition, accreditation, course duration, total fees, assessment methods and employer acceptance before enrolling. A certificate does not automatically carry the same value as a recognised university degree. Combining technical knowledge, communication, critical thinking and practical experience may offer a stronger career pathway as workplaces continue to adopt AI and digital tools.
