Tier 2 and Tier 3 buyers power online sales, while rising prices change festive shopping habits
Small-Town India Drives Festive E-Commerce Deals 2026 as Shoppers Hunt for Better Value

India's E-Commerce Festive Shopping Boom 2026
India’s festive online shopping boom is increasingly being driven by smaller cities, first-time buyers and value-focused consumers. However, higher electronics prices and changing discounts are making shoppers compare deals more carefully this season.
Small-Town India Drives Festive E-Commerce Deals 2026 as Shoppers Hunt for Better Value
1. Smaller Cities Take a Bigger Share of Festive Online Shopping
India’s 2026 festive shopping season is seeing strong participation beyond major cities. Redseer Strategy Consultants estimates that e-commerce platforms generated ₹24,000 crore in sales during October 8 and 9, with around 60–65 million shoppers placing 80–90 million orders. Nearly two-thirds of shoppers during those opening days came from Tier 2 and smaller towns and rural markets. The first phase from October 8 to 18 later recorded an estimated $7–8 billion in festive e-commerce sales, showing how online shopping is reaching a wider range of Indian consumers.

2. Smartphones Lead, but Everyday Categories Are Growing
Smartphones contributed around 38–40% of festive sales value during the opening two days, according to Redseer. Electronics and large appliances also attracted buyers, while fashion, beauty and personal care remained important categories. Separate order data from Unicommerce showed a 31% year-on-year rise in e-commerce order volumes during October 7–13. Quick-commerce orders increased 85%, while Tier 3 towns accounted for 42% of total e-commerce orders in its analysis. These figures suggest that festive shopping is expanding beyond expensive gadgets to groceries, personal care and daily-use products.

3. Higher Prices Make Shoppers More Careful
The festive season is not equally strong across every product category. An October 19 report by ETtech said some e-commerce executives had observed weaker demand for premium smartphones, laptops and home appliances, partly because prices had increased. The report also cited a 16% year-on-year fall in smartphone unit sales during the early festive e-commerce period, according to Counterpoint Research. At the same time, Amazon told the publication that its Great Indian Festival had received more than 440 million visits during its opening phase. The mixed signals show that high traffic does not automatically translate into stronger purchases for every product.
4. How to Find Better Festive Deals Before Checkout
The Amazon Great Indian Festival Diwali Edition began on October 28, with a 10% instant discount on eligible HDFC Bank credit-card and credit-card EMI transactions. Prime members can also receive an extra ₹250 cashback on selected products, subject to conditions. ICICI Bank has separately announced festive partnerships across electronics, fashion, travel and home products. Before buying, compare the final price across platforms, check the bank-offer limit, verify seller ratings and review return policies. For expensive purchases, compare exchange value and EMI charges as well. A genuine saving comes from a lower final bill, not simply a large discount displayed on a product page.
