Indian Investors Explore Global Markets – Janatha Mirror

Indian individuals are investing more money overseas as global stocks attract interest. GIFT City funds and new RBI proposals are shaping the investment landscape.

1. Indian Investors Look Beyond Domestic Markets

A growing number of Indian investors are exploring international markets as they seek opportunities beyond domestic equities. According to a Reuters report published on October 28, overseas investments by Indian individuals more than doubled year-on-year to nearly $2.3 billion in the first half of 2026. The figure includes direct investments and investments made through funds. The trend reflects rising interest in US technology companies, artificial intelligence-related businesses and global exchange-traded funds.

2. GIFT City Emerges as a New Investment Route

GIFT City in Gujarat is attracting attention as asset management companies introduce funds that provide access to international markets. Reuters reported that several major fund houses have launched overseas investment products through this financial hub. This development comes as the existing overseas investment limits for Indian mutual funds are close to being exhausted. However, investors should understand each fund's minimum investment, currency exposure, taxation and regulatory conditions before investing.

3. RBI Remittance Proposal Draws Attention

Another development concerns the Reserve Bank of India's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). Under the existing framework, resident individuals can remit up to $250,000 in a financial year for permitted overseas transactions. A report published by Mint on October 28 said the RBI had reportedly proposed a ₹50 lakh sub-limit for certain categories of remittances. The proposal has no confirmed implementation date, and the exact categories covered need clarification. Investors should not treat the reported proposal as an implemented rule.

4. Global Diversification Requires Careful Planning

International investments can provide exposure to different economies and industries, but they also involve currency fluctuations, overseas market volatility, taxation and regulatory risks. Reuters also reported that some overseas exchange-traded funds traded at substantial premiums to the value of their underlying holdings. Investors should check the fund's net asset value, costs and liquidity before making a decision. Financial experts generally caution against investing abroad simply to chase recent returns. A balanced portfolio should reflect personal goals, investment duration and risk tolerance.
