Kolkata Durga Puja Stampede: Death Toll Rises to 19; Seven Arrested

A devastating stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata has claimed 19 lives and left at least 25 people injured. Police have arrested seven individuals in connection with the tragedy, while the West Bengal government has announced financial compensation and other assistance for the victims’ families.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening, October 17, amid heavy crowds and rainfall during Durga Puja celebrations. Preliminary reports indicate that overcrowding, narrow access routes and panic among devotees contributed to the tragedy. The exact sequence of events and the responsibility for the incident remain under investigation. 

Seven Arrested, Investigation Underway

Police have arrested seven people, including members of the puja organising committee and personnel responsible for crowd management and private security. A criminal case has been registered, and investigators are examining possible lapses in crowd control, safety arrangements and emergency response measures. 

Government Announces Compensation

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced compensation of ₹25 lakh and a government job for an eligible family member of each deceased victim. The state government will also provide ₹5 lakh to each injured person and cover their medical treatment expenses.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has separately announced ex-gratia assistance of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased person and ₹50,000 for those injured. 

Safety Concerns at Public Celebrations

The tragedy has raised serious concerns about crowd management, emergency exits and safety arrangements at large religious gatherings. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the stampede, while the incident has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of safety standards at festival venues.

The loss of 19 lives has cast a shadow over Durga Puja celebrations in Kolkata, highlighting the urgent need for effective crowd-control measures and better emergency preparedness to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
