Headache in Hot Weather

Experiencing headaches in hot weather? Discover 5 simple tips to relieve heat-related headaches, prevent dehydration and stay healthy during summer.

Headaches are a common complaint during hot weather. Spending too much time in the sun, dehydration, excessive heat, lack of sleep and skipping meals can all contribute to headaches. A few simple steps may help ease the discomfort and prevent heat-related problems.

1. Move to a Cool Place

If a headache starts while you are outdoors, immediately move to a shaded or air-conditioned place. Rest for a while and avoid further exposure to direct sunlight. Placing a cool, damp cloth on your forehead or the back of your neck may also help.

2. Drink Enough Water

Excessive sweating can cause the body to lose water and lead to dehydration, which may trigger a headache. Drink water regularly throughout the day. If you have been sweating heavily, an oral rehydration solution (ORS) may help replace lost fluids and salts. Prepare it according to the instructions on the packet.

3. Use a Cool Compress

Soak a clean cloth in cool water and gently place it on your forehead or neck. This may help reduce discomfort caused by heat. Avoid placing ice directly on your skin.

4. Eat Light, Regular Meals

Skipping meals can trigger headaches in some people. Eat meals on time and include water-rich foods such as watermelon, cucumber and oranges. It is also advisable to limit alcohol and excessive caffeine.

5. Take Precautions Before Going Outdoors

Try to avoid going out during the hottest part of the day. If you must step outside, use an umbrella or hat, wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothes and take breaks in shaded areas. Keep drinking water throughout the day.

When Should You Seek Medical Help?

A headache accompanied by dizziness, nausea, weakness, muscle cramps or heavy sweating may indicate heat exhaustion. Move to a cool place, start cooling your body and seek medical advice.

Confusion, fainting, seizures or an unusually high body temperature may indicate heatstroke, a medical emergency. Seek emergency medical help immediately.

Note: Do not assume every headache is caused by hot weather. A sudden, extremely severe headache, recurring headaches or pain that does not improve with rest and hydration should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
