Hyderabad’s three municipal corporations have identified around 1,500 unauthorised buildings under construction in recent weeks. The action includes demolitions and notices against structures that allegedly violate approved building plans or exceed permitted floors. Officials say the drive aims to improve construction safety and enforce building regulations.

Hyderabad’s civic authorities have intensified their crackdown on unauthorised construction, identifying around 1,500 buildings under construction that allegedly violate approved plans over a period of a few weeks.

According to a report published by The Times of India on October 19, the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation have stepped up inspections and enforcement.

The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation has demolished around 500 structures, while GHMC and Malkajgiri officials have identified additional violations and initiated action. The report said the number of buildings flagged in the recent drive is comparable to the annual tally of violations previously identified by the erstwhile GHMC.

The action follows recent structural incidents, including the collapse of an under-construction building in Anjaiah Nagar, Gachibowli, which killed two people, and the reported tilting of a multi-storey building in Gopanpally.

Officials said the drive is focusing on buildings where additional floors are being constructed beyond approved plans, including structures rising five to seven floors on relatively small plots. Such construction can pose safety risks to residents, neighbouring properties and the public.

In areas under GHMC, officials have identified hundreds of ongoing constructions that are unauthorised or deviate from sanctioned plans. Authorities are issuing notices and considering demolition or sealing action in accordance with applicable rules.

Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation has also carried out demolitions, while officials say inspections will continue to prevent unauthorised construction from resuming after enforcement action.

For prospective homebuyers, the developments highlight the importance of checking building permissions, sanctioned plans, occupancy documentation and the legal status of a property before making a purchase.
