New rule highlights mutual fund costs for investors
SEBI Makes Direct Mutual Funds the Default Choice Online

Direct Mutual Fund Plans 2026 Janatha Mirror
SEBI has made Direct Plans the default on mutual fund company websites and apps from November 1, 2026, bringing greater attention to investment costs.
SEBI's new mutual fund rule takes effect
Investors using mutual fund companies' websites and apps will now see Direct Plans as the default option. The change took effect on November 1, following an announcement by SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey. Investors can still select Regular Plans, but they must be informed about their higher expense ratios.

Why Direct Plans can cost less
Direct and Regular Plans invest in the same mutual fund scheme and hold the same portfolio. The key difference is distribution costs. Direct Plans do not include distributor commissions and generally have lower expense ratios. Over long investment periods, even small differences in annual costs can affect the final value of an investment.

Investors still have a choice
The new default does not mean Regular Plans have been discontinued. Investors who prefer distributor assistance and related services can continue choosing them. Direct Plans may suit people who can independently research schemes, understand risks and monitor their portfolios. The right option depends on an investor's knowledge and support requirements.
Check costs and risks before investing
Investors should compare expense ratios, investment objectives, risk levels and past performance before selecting a mutual fund. Lower costs alone do not guarantee better returns. Equity funds carry market risk, and investors should align investments with their financial goals and time horizon. The new rule is a reminder to understand what investment services cost before making a decision.
