Amazon, Flipkart and other covered e-commerce platforms will face stricter rules on discount prices, sponsored listings and misleading shopping tricks.

Fake Discounts Under Watch: New Online Shopping Rules From January 1, 2027

India New E-Commerce Discount Rules 2027

Online shoppers in India could find it easier to judge sale prices from January 1, 2027. New e-commerce rules require platforms announcing a price reduction to display the reduced price alongside the lowest price offered during the previous 30 days. The amendments also target misleading search results, dark patterns and certain unrelated bundled fees.

Online Sale Prices Face a Major Transparency Test

Online shopping in India is set for a significant change from January 1, 2027. Under the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Amendment Rules, 2026, e-commerce platforms must show shoppers more transparent pricing information when announcing discounts.

The key change concerns the “prior price” displayed alongside a reduced price. The government defines it as the lowest price at which the product or service was offered during the 30 days preceding the announcement of the price reduction. This could help shoppers evaluate promotional claims instead of relying only on a large discount percentage.

What Changes for Amazon, Flipkart and Other Platforms?

When a covered e-commerce platform or seller announces a price reduction, both the reduced price and the defined prior price must be shown. The change is designed to give consumers a clearer reference point when comparing offers during major sales, festive promotions and limited-period deals.

For example, imagine a product advertised at ₹2,000 with a “50% off” label. Under the new requirement, shoppers should also be shown the applicable prior price based on the lowest price during the preceding 30 days. The example is illustrative; the actual display must follow the notified rules.

Important: This does not mean every advertised discount will automatically be a bargain. Delivery charges, product quality, warranty, return conditions and competing prices will still matter when deciding whether to buy.

Misleading Search Rankings and Sponsored Listings in Focus

The amendments also address how products appear in search results. E-commerce entities must not manipulate search results or indexes in ways that mislead users or undermine relevance to their queries.

Sponsored product listings must be distinctly identified through clear and prominent disclosures. This is important because shoppers may otherwise mistake paid placement for an independent recommendation or the most suitable deal.

The rules also require covered platforms to comply with India’s Dark Patterns Guidelines, 2023, conduct a yearly self-audit and prominently display a certificate of compliance. Dark patterns are deceptive interface practices that can pressure or mislead consumers into choices they might not otherwise make.

What About Hidden Fees and Membership Offers?

The amended rules restrict marketplace e-commerce entities from collecting bundled fees for services unrelated to the e-commerce platform, subject to the specified exception for loyalty or membership programmes.

For shoppers, this makes it particularly important to review the final checkout total before paying. A low product price may not represent the best overall deal if extra charges apply. The precise treatment of a fee depends on the rules and the circumstances; the amendment should not be read as a blanket ban on all add-on services or membership charges.

Platforms must also provide important seller and transaction information, including applicable return and refund terms, warranty details, delivery and payment information. For imported goods, importer details and country-of-origin information must be disclosed as required by the rules.

How Shoppers Can Prepare Before January 2027

Consumers can make smarter buying decisions even before the new rules take effect:

  • Compare prices: Check the same product across multiple sellers and platforms.

  • Look beyond the discount badge: Compare the final payable price, not just the percentage saved.

  • Check the seller: Review seller details, product specifications and customer feedback.

  • Read the conditions: Verify delivery costs, warranty coverage, return windows and refund terms.

  • Review checkout carefully: Look for optional add-ons and charges before confirming payment.

  • Keep evidence: Save screenshots of the offer, price and order details if a dispute arises.

  • Will Every Deal Become Cheaper?

No. The amendments focus on transparency and consumer protection, not on forcing sellers to reduce prices. A product may still be expensive even when its price history is clearly displayed. The real benefit is that shoppers should have a better basis for judging the advertised reduction and comparing competing offers.

The rules are scheduled to come into force on January 1, 2027. Until then, shoppers should continue checking price comparisons and purchase conditions rather than assuming that every “limited-time deal” offers the lowest available price.
