Studying All Night Before Exams? Lack of Sleep May Be Hurting Your Learning
An Indian study of 1,521 adolescents found sleep deprivation was associated with lower grades and mental health concerns. Learn why sleep matters during exam preparation.
Why Students Sacrifice Sleep
As examinations approach, many students stay awake late into the night to finish chapters and revise important questions. Although extra study time may seem helpful, sacrificing sleep can make it harder to concentrate, remember information and manage stress. Effective preparation depends not only on how long students study, but also on whether they give their brains enough time to rest.

What an Indian Study Found
A study published in the Indian Journal of Community Medicine in 2026 examined 1,521 school-going adolescents aged 12 to 18 in urban Delhi. Researchers reported sleep deprivation in 22.5% of participants and found associations between sleep deprivation, lower academic grades, depressive symptoms and poor sleep hygiene. The findings concern the students included in that study and should not be treated as a national estimate for all Indian adolescents.

How Sleep Supports Learning and Memory
Sleep helps the brain process and consolidate information learned during the day. When students repeatedly sleep too little, they may struggle with concentration, recalling information and solving problems. Fatigue can also affect mood and the ability to handle examination pressure. Staying awake for additional hours may therefore be counterproductive if exhaustion makes it harder to use what has been studied.

Can Late-Night Phone Use Make Things Worse?
Students sometimes turn to social media or short videos to relax after studying. However, what begins as a short break can extend late into the night and reduce sleep time. Establishing a consistent bedtime, keeping phones away when preparing to sleep and choosing a calmer evening routine can help students protect their rest during busy academic periods.
Better Exam Preparation Habits
Students can avoid last-minute cramming by dividing the syllabus into manageable sections and revising regularly. Short breaks, practice questions and a realistic study schedule can make preparation more organised. Maintaining adequate sleep is also important, particularly before an examination. If sleep difficulties, persistent exhaustion or anxiety continue, students should speak with a parent, teacher or healthcare professional. Good preparation should support both academic performance and well-being.
