CBSE Good News: Classes 9 to 12 to Learn AI Through a Special 20-Hour Module

October 26, 2026
CBSE AI Module

NCERT's 20-hour AI module for Classes 9–12 covers deepfakes, data privacy, AI errors and responsible technology use. Read the key details.

Students in Classes 9 to 12 studying under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) have a new learning opportunity in artificial intelligence (AI) and computational thinking. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has developed a 20-hour introductory module to help students understand how AI works, identify misleading AI-generated content and use technology responsibly.

Developed in consultation with IIT Madras and IIT Jodhpur, the activity-based module is designed for students with no prior knowledge of AI. It combines practical exercises, discussions and guided activities to introduce the technology and its limitations.

Learners will understand how AI systems identify patterns from examples and data. Activities also demonstrate how the quality and variety of training data can affect the results produced by an AI system.

3. When AI gets it wrong

AI-generated answers can sound convincing even when they are incorrect. Students will learn about deepfakes, misinformation and AI errors, along with ways to verify information before accepting or sharing it.

4. Data privacy and ethical use

The module introduces personal-data protection, consent, fairness and digital safety. Students will also learn why sensitive details such as passwords, one-time passwords, Aadhaar numbers, PAN numbers and personal documents should not be entered into AI tools.

5. Using AI tools responsibly

Students will practise writing prompts, evaluating responses and correcting errors. The approach encourages them to use AI as a helper rather than a replacement for their own thinking and judgement.

Will students take a separate board examination?

CBSE's 2026–27 curriculum guidance provides for computational thinking and AI modules for Classes 9 to 12 to be taught as part of school-based internal assessment. The 20-hour module should not automatically be interpreted as a separate board examination. Students should check with their schools for the applicable assessment and implementation details.

Can schools teach the module without a computer for every student?

Yes. The teaching approach includes activities using digital devices, teacher-led demonstrations and offline exercises involving paper and classroom discussions. This offers schools different ways to introduce the concepts, including settings where individual devices or reliable internet access may be limited.

Why is AI education important for school students?

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly relevant across education, research, business and many careers. Understanding the technology is important, but students also need to recognise its limitations, protect their personal information and verify claims generated by AI systems.

The module aims to build these skills early, encouraging learners to think critically instead of accepting every AI-generated answer as correct.

Key takeaway: The goal is not simply to teach students how to use AI tools. It is to help them understand the technology, question its output and use it safely and responsibly.
